Cannabis Friendly UruguayCannabis for personal use has never been criminalized in Uruguay and is openly offered to tourist for around $30 an ounce. Cannabis is openly smoked in trendier areas and outside of clubs, with disinterested police who do not bother you.Full legalization of Cannabis and all drugs was almost passed in December 2012 by the Uruguayan parliament. Jose Mujica, the 77 year old president and former leftist Guerrilla, fully backs Cannabis legalization while polls show that the population is divided on Cannabis legalization. The President asked parliament to delay their vote saying that "support has to come from the streets." La Ley Sobre la Marijuana (the law on Marijuana) would create a National Institute of Cannabis responsible for education, santions for law violations and investing Cannabis profits from Pot Sales into crime prevention and anti addiction programs. If passed this legislation would allow individuals to buy up to 40 grams of Cannabis monthly from state authorized distributors. This important legislation is expected to pass some time during 2013. When passed, Uruguayans will be allowed to grow Cannabis at home or in Pot Collectives. The state will issue licenses and control the Cannabis Industry from seed to retail sale. Government is undecided whether that will be accomplished by the public or private sector. Households will be allowed to grow up to six plants and to have up to 480 grams or about 17 ounces of Cannabis. Cannabis Clubs wouild be allowed up to 15 members, 90 plants and annual production of 7.2 kilos, or about 16 pounds of Cannabis. Cannabis prohibition has failed to halt illegal drug consumtion which has increased in Uruguay during the last 50 year and the President believes that state regulation will help prevent smugglers thus putting an end to drug related violence. The Defense Minister is aggressively pushing the legislation and claimes that Marijuana "will be planted by the country's farmers," Uruguay offers beautiful coastal towns, busy nightlife, first rate highways and an exciting beautiful, coastal capital city. Uruguayans are friendly and it's one of the safest countries in Latin America. This is not a third world country, it's Marijuana Tourism opportunities are very promising. Uruguay is already a good candidate for Marijuana Tourism and has the potential to become the Amsterdam of South America if the intended legislation passes. The beaches and rugged coast line are beautiful, the capital is both elegant and trendy with plenty of cultural activities.
